Scientists: Calcium and Vitamin D supplements do more harm than good.

American experts are convinced that older women should stop using supplements that contain calcium and group D vitamin. It is known that these supplements are recommended for the prevention of fractures and for strengthening bone tissue, however, it turned out that their effectiveness is significantly exaggerated. Such conclusions were made by representatives of the U.S. advisory group. Preventative Services Task Force.

Their statement is based on an analysis of the results of two studies, the purpose of which was to study the effect of calcium and vitamin D on the bone tissue of middle-aged people. In this case, it was about respondents up to 65 years of age who have not been diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency and no osteoporosis.

As a result, scientists have not found convincing evidence showing that vitamin D supplementation with calcium strengthens the bone tissue of females and males. If we talk about women, we mean the period before and after menopause. Women in post-menopause are at risk for osteoporosis, so doctors and recommend such supplements to them. According to USPSTF experts, vitamin D and calcium, regardless of dosage, do not have a positive effect on their bone tissue.

At the same time, it was found that daily intake of such supplements almost doubles the risk of kidney stones. USPSTF experts point out that their recommendations for people over 65 remain unchanged. For them, regular intake of supplements containing vitamin D is necessary for effective prevention of fractures.
